Checking Climate Misinformation
In a sustained engagement that lasted several months from April 2022 and finally reached tens of newsrooms, the SJAI collaborated with Google News Initiative India, Mongabay, Dataleads, and other partners to create a climate change module. The module, which aimed to raise awareness on climate change misinformation, was the first specifically science-focussed piece in the broad fact-checking curriculum GNI and Dataleads offer, which has been iterating and growing since 2018. The SJAI was proud to begin a network effect where SJAI participants were involved in “training the trainers” who would then pay the knowledge forward.
Partnering with the SJF 2022
The Science Journalism Forum is a global virtual meeting of science journalists and communicators. In its inaugural year, the SJAI was able to co-organize or participate in several panels at the SJF, which was held in November 2022. Whether it was a “Meet the Editors” gathering, or a discussion on the future of science journalism in South Asia, or Climate Change misinformation and learning from newly-formed associations in India, Nepal and Brazil, SJAI had a full showing at the forum. As a result of its collaboration, the SJAI was able to also offer its members no-charge passes to the online event.
Membership Drives
The SJAI’s governing body meets frequently to evaluate membership applications. Currently, we have 60+ members and it has given us quiet satisfaction to watch the membership grow. Membership applications are evaluated on a rolling basis throughout the year. If your colleague or friend is interested in joining, contact us below.
